Resituating | Under Reconstruction (2020)
In Under Reconstruction (2020, 8 mins) an unknown terrain is explored of a building being demolished. Three entities become self-aware through each other's presence. The machine comes to life, while some characters still retain elements of objects within themselves. Slowly, the non-living is broken down.
Laury Hooghuis (b. 1993, Netherlands) makes films in which she places the characters and cinematography in an architectural perspective. For the spatio-temporal experience, the elements of the visual style are just as important as the sound design. In her artistic practice she questions to what extent imagination creates the reality around us. She takes the viewer into a dialogue of an imaginary space that could be in its own inner world or in the physical world. In this elusive atmosphere, the unknown and sometimes terrifyingly deep layers of consciousness are explored.

MIDISSAGE
@UITNACHT
On Friday, January 30, 171project.space opens the latest WindowTalk featuring film artist Laury Hooghuis during Uitnacht Arnhem (20:00-22:00). In 'Under Reconstruction' (2020, 8 min.), a demolition site becomes an unknown terrain where three entities become self-aware through each other's presence—the machine comes to life while characters retain elements of objects within themselves. The presentation in 171project.space's 24/7 visible window display reinforces the dialogue between the cinematic and physical that is central to Hooghuis' work, transforming the film's architectural perspective onto the street. Laury Hooghuis, together with characters from the film, will give tours of the specially designed window at 20:30 and 21:30, featuring authentic props salvaged from demolition thanks to Harrie. The exhibition runs until mid-February 2026.
